How did the war change the role of media literacy in Ukraine?

In June, Filter jointly with the Ukrainian Institute of Media and Communication organized an international expert conference “Media literacy in wartime: new challenges and transformations.”

The conference consisted of four sessions:

  • Media literacy as an integral part of national security;
  • Transformation of the media literacy field after the full-scale invasion of Russia. Lessons from Ukraine;
  • The role of education in the development of media literacy during the war and in the post-war period;
  • The work of journalists during information warfare.

“We would like to understand how the field of media literacy is changing due to the full-scale Russian invasion, which tools are working and which are not. This is important in order to work more effectively in this direction and help people cope with the flood of fakes and Russian disinformation and propaganda,” Diana Dutsyk, the executive director of the Ukrainian Institute of Media and Communication, stressed.

Among the guests of the event were representatives of the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence (BCME), the Finnish National Audiovisual Institute (KAVI), the Swedish Psychological Defense Agency, the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education of Ukraine and many others.
