The national media literacy project “Filter” of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine is starting a collaboration with the United Nations Development Program to jointly combat disinformation and develop media literacy in Ukraine.
On March 27th, 2023, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, Mr. Jaco Cilliers, met with Alexander Tkachenko, the Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, to strengthen their existing collaboration and discuss future opportunities between the UN and the Ministry, particularly the “Filter” project.
Jaco Cilliers confirmed the UN’s strong support for the “Filter” project, which aims to increase media literacy among the Ukrainian population.
“In the circumstances of the full scale invasion, it is of paramount importance to support media and digital literacy initiatives of the Government to enhance the capacities of policymakers, educators, information and media professionals and youth organizations to identify, dispel, and debunk false and misleading information and with joint effort reduce and prevent negative influence of disinformation on all the populations, especially the most vulnerable groups”, stressed Mr. Jaco Cilliers.
Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko expressed his gratitude to UNDP for the support provided to Ministry during previous years and welcomed the strengthening of the cooperation in the nearest future.
During the full-scale war, the ability to think critically and distinguish disinformation has become more important than ever. Since February 24th, 2022, the Filter has been actively working on developing resistance to Russian propaganda in Ukrainian society.
From now on, UNDP will be assisting us in this effort. Thank you for supporting the construction of a society resilient to Russian propaganda. Media literacy should become one of the daily skills of Ukrainians.
